CUPW Statement - ESDC Investigation and Recommendations at Canada Post’s Gateway Facility
Since a COVID-19 outbreak was declared at the Canada Post Gateway facility in Mississauga earlier this year, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers has demanded an investigation into the root cause of the outbreak and what needs to be done to ensure it doesn’t happen again.
CUPW has also expressed concern that our request hasn’t been taken seriously, as Canada Post has yet to conduct a full investigation.
The ESDC investigation exposes how Canada Post has failed to prioritize the health and safety of postal workers, by failing to comply with the Canada Labour Code. This further underlines the necessity of a full investigation into the cause of the outbreak to reduce the risk of further outbreaks and keep workers safe.
This investigation and subsequent recommendations emphasize that it’s not just CUPW that expects more from Canada Post. The federal government does as well.
This must be the catalyst for change at Gateway and across the country.
