Subject: Support for striking Canada Post workers

The Comité chômage de Montréal (CCM) supports striking Canada Post workers. The CCM stands in solidarity with CUPW’s demands and the job actions it has initiated because of the deadlock in its negotiations with Canada Post. After almost a year of negotiations, CUPW has no other choice but to proceed with a work stoppage.

The rate of workplace injuries at Canada Post is currently 5.4 times that of the rest of the federal sector. In addition, a majority of rural and suburban mail carriers have been complaining since 2016 of an overall deterioration in their working conditions. Striking workers at Canada Post have the right to expect that this issue will be addressed in these negotiations.

However, Canada Post is refusing to discuss major issues, such as the health and safety of its employees, gender equality and the creation of decent jobs instead of precarious employment.

Accordingly, we wish to express our support for the positions put forth by striking Canada Post workers.
